What is Sudden cardiac arrests (SCA)

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness. Is a result from an electrical disturbance in your heart that disrupts its pumping action, stopping blood flow to the rest of your body

Normal Heart Activity:
Note the regular pattern with each beat of the heart sudden-cardiac-normal-heart.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest:
The heart enters a chaotic, typically ventricular fibrillation (VF) rhythm. The spikes disappear and a rapid, “wavy” pattern occurs

Problem:
The heart cannot pump blood effectively and the victim will collapse.

Symptoms:
1. Victim is unconscious
2. Not breathing spontaneously
3. No pulse

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating properly, causing loss of blood flow to the body and brain. Common signs include sudden collapse, unconsciousness, no pulse, and absence of normal breathing. Some people may experience warning symptoms before SCA, such as chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, weakness, nausea, or heart palpitations. SCA is a medical emergency that requires immediate action.

Performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) quickly can improve survival chances. Early recognition and fast treatment are essential to help save a person’s life.

The immediate cause of SCA is usually an abnormality in your heart rhythm, the result of a malfunction in your heart electrical system.

Cardiac Disease (65% – 70%)

  • Coronary Heart Disease (Reduce blood flow to the heart)
  • Heart Attack (Scaring of Tissues)
  • Enlarged Heart (Cardio myopathy)
  • Congenital and Valvular Disease
  • Electrical Problems in Heart

Non Cardiac (30% – 35%)

  • Electric Shock
  • Drowning
  • Trauma to Chest / Head area
  • Overdose of Illegal Drugs
  • Stress

The chance of survival drops by 10% for every minute that nothing is done to resuscitate the patient.

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It works by analyzing the heart’s rhythm and delivering an electric shock, if needed, to restore a normal heartbeat. AEDs are designed to be simple and safe for anyone to use, even without medical training, because they provide clear voice and visual instructions. They are commonly found in public places such as schools, airports, offices, and shopping malls. Quick use of an AED, together with CPR, can greatly increase a person’s chances of survival after sudden cardiac arrest.

1. AED is now the standard equipment stipulated by the National CERT Standard!
With amendment to the Fire Safety Act on 1 Sept 2013, all premises with Fire Safety Managers are required to set up a Company Emergency Response Team (CERT).

2. Audit Requirement:
Premises shall be audited by SCDF on the CERT scheme. Failure of the audit, the premises maybe subjected to re-audit or revoke of P&FM storage license.

3. Failure to form CERT:
The owner or occupier of the specified premises shall be guilty of an offence and is liable for a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or both.

Heartsine Samaritan AED

A HeartSine AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable device designed to help treat sudden cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly stops beating effectively. After you turn it on, the AED provides step-by-step voice prompts and analyzes the person’s heart rhythm through pads placed on the chest. If a shockable rhythm is detected, it will instruct you to deliver a shock to help restore a normal rhythm. The AED also guides the rescuer to perform CPR, which is critical while waiting for emergency services.

HeartSine comes in models such as SAM 350P, SAM 360P, and SAM 500P.

  • SAM 350P: Standard AED with clear voice and visual prompts.

  • SAM 360P: Similar to 350P but includes an automatic shock feature (no shock button), depending on configuration/availability.

  • SAM 500P: Adds CPR feedback coaching (helps guide CPR rate/depth cues, depending on setup).

Yes. HeartSine AEDs are designed for public access and can be used by people without medical training. They provide simple voice instructions, diagrams, and clear prompts such as where to place the pads, when to start CPR, and when (or if) to deliver a shock. The device will only advise a shock if it detects a shockable rhythm.

For basic upkeep, we recommend:

  • Visual check routinely to confirm and ensure the status indicator shows a green blinking light, indicating sufficient battery and passed self test, and a red warning light mean insufficient battery or failed self-test.

  • Ensure the AED is stored correctly and accessories (rescue kit, scissors, razor, towel, gloves) are complete.

  • Track the Pad-Pak expiry date and replace it before expiry or after any use.

HeartSine uses a convenient Pad-Pak system (or Paediatric-Pak for children), which typically combines the battery and electrode pads into one cartridge. This makes replacement and maintenance simpler—when it’s time to replace, you replace the single cartridge.

The shelf-life of the batterey and pads is 4 yeras. If the AED is used in a rescue, the Pad-Pak should be replaced afterward.

Yes, but you should use the correct paediatric pads/cartridge (commonly called a Paediatric-Pak) that reduces energy to a child-appropriate level. Follow the AED voice prompts and the diagrams on the pads for placement.

Lifepak CR2 defibrillator AED

The LIFEPAK CR2 is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) designed for fast response to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in public and workplace settings. It gives clear voice prompts, analyzes the casualty’s heart rhythm, and advises (or delivers) a shock when appropriate.

Yes. The CR2 is designed for first responders and laypersons. Once you open/turn on the unit, it provides step-by-step voice instructions and visual cues for pad placement, CPR, and shock delivery. The AED will only advise a shock if it detects a shockable rhythm.

Traditional AEDs often pause CPR to analyze the rhythm. The CR2 (in cprINSIGHT-equipped versions) is designed to analyze heart rhythm during CPR to reduce interruptions because high-quality, continuous CPR is important for survival.

The CR2 uses a QUIK-STEP electrode set designed for faster, simpler deployment: open the pad tray, follow the diagrams, and apply pads to the chest. This helps reduce hesitation and saves time during an emergency.

Yes. The CR2 has a dedicated CHILD MODE button. Child mode is accessed by pressing the CHILD MODE button; when in child mode, the device delivers lower energy levels appropriate for young children and without needing to change electrodes.

For basic upkeep, we recommend:

  • Visual check routinely to confirm andEnsure the Status indicator shows a green blinking light, indicating sufficient power and passed self test, No blinking light indicates no power or failed self test. (AED starts long beeps, remove the battery & contact us)
